Predicting Wildfire Danger - NSF NCAR's "Derecho" Supercomputer Forecasts Fire-Sparking Weather

To forecast and prepare for the weather conditions that lead to fire danger, one of the most destructive types of extreme weather, supercomputers like NSF NCAR’s 19.87-petaflops Derecho system — and the vital software that keeps them running efficiently — are paramount. To facilitate their world-renowned research on these incredible machines, the team at NSF NCAR uses Altair PBS® Professional®.

Revolutionizing the HPC Landscape - NSCC and Altair Collaborate to Connect HPC Communities and Optimize Resources

As long-time Altair users, the NSCC was familiar with the quality of Altair’s solutions, elite support, and community resources, and chose to work with Altair to design a solution that met these requirements with Altair® Liquid Scheduling™. Liquid Scheduling extends the Altair HPC stack already deployed at NSCC, taking the Altair® PBS Professional® workload manager to another level of scalability and performance.

Forecasting Antarctic Weather - NSF NCAR's "Derecho" Supercomputer Enables Critical Twice-Daily Forecasts
At Antarctica’s McMurdo Station, extreme weather is a given. Average temperatures there hover around -1 F (-18 C), but have dipped as low as -58 F (-50 C). Accurate weather reports in this harsh Antarctic climate are crucial to ensure that travel is safe and researchers and crew aren’t surprised by blizzards or other extreme phenomena. NSF NCAR supercomputers, with workload orchestration by Altair PBS® Professional®, provide McMurdo Station and the U.S. Antarctic Program with the twice-daily reports they rely on to stay safe in the harsh polar climate.
