The Process: How it Works

  1. Download the Altair tools of your choice.
  2. Learn to use the tools with this page's learning resources and the tools' academic hubs.
  3. Optimize your chosen robotics application.
  4. Record a short video explaining your project, use of Altair software, and your results.
  5. Upload your video to a public video hosting platform (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
  6. Submit your video link in the form on the submission page.
  7. Repeat every quarter for the chance at cash prizes!

Submission deadlines:

1st Quarter: December 31, 2024

2nd Quarter: March 31, 2025

3rd Quarter: June 30, 2025.

Winners for each quarter will be announced 3-4 weeks after the deadline.

Optimized Support Bracket

Inspire Motion optimized a support bracket on a FIRST robot's intake system, resulting in a significant mass reduction while maintaining the desired safety factor compared to the original "hand-optimized" version.

Optimized Rover Suspension

After an Inspire Motion simulation revealed an initial Mars Rover design failed to climb a 10-inch obstacle, the rover's Rocker-Bogie suspension redesign enabled it to climb a 14-inch obstacle.

Optimized Robot Arm

Inspire Motion optimized a grabber robot's arms, reducing mass, motor torque requirements, and improving lifting capability by using forces from the motion analysis in the optimization.

A Great Real-World Industry Example for Robotics Optimization

In this project, MX3D and Altair collaborated to push the boundaries of simulation-driven design and additive manufacturing. The video showcases the type of work we want for the contest, though on a smaller scale.

The engineers aimed to create a lighter, more efficient robot arm while keeping its strength. Using Inspire, they reduced the arm’s weight by 50%, cutting material costs and printing time through Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).

Process overview:

  1. First, they scanned the middle section of the heavy robot arm.
  2. Then they built a digital twin of the arm.
  3. Next, they used Inspire to perform generative design optimization, drastically reducing the part’s weight.
  4. Lastly, they WAAM-printed the newly optimized part in stainless steel, refined it, and installed it in the robot arm.

For more in-depth information about the process, check out the webinar and the white paper.

Check out their video to see the process and amazing results.
